Is it real amethyst? If so why isn’t it more expensive?

During the 20th century, the price of amethyst dropped after big mines were discovered in Brazil and Uruguay. This crystal, which was one of the most valuable gemstones before, is considered semi-precious now. 

One pound of A+ amethyst is priced around $15-20 by wholesale traders now.
